Unfilled licenses available at WGFD offices and online on a first-come basis. Less competitive units may have general pronghorn and deer tags available.
Wyoming preference points accumulate annually. Apply Jan 2–31 for all species. General elk license has no preference point system — available OTC (resident) or limited non-resident sale. Leftover limited quota licenses may be available May–June at WGFD offices.

🧬 CWD Zones

Wyoming was one of the first states to detect CWD (1985). CWD prevalence in SE Wyoming deer herds is among the highest in North America. Mandatory carcass transport restrictions apply in positive detection zones. Do not transport heads/spines out of regulated areas without testing. Moose are susceptible — test voluntarily.

Teton and Shoshone NF moose are among the largest in the Rocky Mountains. Willow flats along the Snake and upper tributaries hold bulls 50"+ spread. Pack-in or horse required for wilderness drainages. A bucket-list hunt with very long wait times.
Unit 7 Extremely Difficult
Area 7 — Jackson Hole / Teton Wilderness
🦌 Elk
Season: Sept 15 – Oct 31 (Type 1 archery/rifle)
Bonus pts needed: 15–25+ NR preference points for quality hunts
Success rate: 60–80% (with guide; lower DIY)
Teton Wilderness — 585,000 acres of designated wilderness. Home to the Jackson Elk Herd (11,000+ elk). 350–380"+ bulls documented. Pack-in required for wilderness core. Horse access only to many drainages. Once-in-a-lifetime quality tag.

Bighorn Mountains — Sheridan/Buffalo areas

Season: Oct 1–31 (General license)
Bonus pts needed: General license — no draw for resident; limited NR
Success rate: 35–50%
Bighorn National Forest offers excellent general elk hunting with road access and backpack options. Bull elk and mule deer season overlap. Good BLM access on east face. No preference points needed for general.

Sweetwater / Carbon Pronghorn

Bonus pts needed: 0–2 NR points for most pronghorn units
Success rate: 80–90%
Carbon County and Sweetwater County hold the highest pronghorn densities in Wyoming. Sage flats with open glassing. Long-range shooting standard. Rut peaks late September — bucks territorial and visible. One of the most accessible WY big game hunts for non-residents.
