🦅 Active Montana Wildlife Alerts

Updated monthly. Wildlife encounters are unpredictable — PeakScout hazard indicators are informational, not guarantees of safety.

🐻

Grizzly Bear Active

Grizzly bears are active throughout MT backcountry. Dogs can trigger grizzly encounters — a dog fleeing back to you may bring the bear with it. Leash required in all bear management areas.

🐻‍❄️

Black Bear Activity

Black bears throughout MT forests. Keep dog leashed and carry bear spray. Dogs barking can attract and agitate bears.

🫎

Moose Active

Moose are extremely dangerous around dogs. Dogs trigger defensive charges — moose stomp and kick. Avoid moose-dense areas: Glacier NP, Bob Marshall, and river corridors.

🦔

Porcupine Encounters

Porcupines are year-round in MT forests. Dogs are frequently quilled — keep leashed in forested terrain.

🦁

Mountain Lion Activity

Mountain lions are present statewide year-round. Small dogs may be viewed as prey. Keep dogs close on trail.

🐺

Wolf Territory

Wolf packs are present in several MT wilderness areas. Dogs may be perceived as prey or territorial rivals. Keep dogs on-leash in wolf-occupied areas.

🌡️ Paw Temperature Guide

Paw temperature estimates are advisory only — always test surfaces yourself before walking your dog.

When air is 77°F, exposed rock and asphalt can reach 125°F+ in full sun.

🟢

Paw Safe — Under 100°F

Surface temp is comfortable. Normal hiking conditions.

🟡

Paw Caution — 100–115°F

Warm surface. Dog boots recommended on exposed sections.

🔴

Paw Danger — 115°F+

Surface too hot for unprotected paws. Boots required or skip.
