📚 Bear Safety Protocol
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks + NPS recommended protocols. Print and carry for remote trips.
📋 BEFORE YOU GO
▼
- Check MT FWP and NPS/USFS alerts for current closures in your target area — same day.
- Carry bear spray on every person in your group (not buried in pack).
- Travel in groups of 3 or more — statistically reduces attack risk significantly.
- Tell someone your itinerary and expected return time.
🏔️ ON THE TRAIL
▼
- Make noise continuously: talk, clap, call out "Hey bear!" around blind corners.
- Stay on trail — especially in thick brush and near water.
- Keep dogs leashed and under control (off-leash dogs provoke bears and lead them back to you).
- Watch for fresh sign: tracks, scat, digs, claw marks, strong odor.
- If you see fresh kills or gut piles, leave the area immediately — grizzlies defend carcasses.
🐻 BEAR ENCOUNTER
▼
- Stay calm. Do NOT run — triggers predatory chase response.
- Speak in low, calm tones. Make yourself look large. Back away slowly.
- Deploy bear spray when bear is within 60 feet and closing — aim at face, hold for 6–9 seconds.
- If contact: play dead for grizzlies (face down, hands laced behind neck, legs spread). Fight back against black bears.
- After the attack: wait 20 minutes before moving to ensure bear has left. Then exit the area.
⛺ IN CAMP
▼
- Cook and eat 200ft+ from sleep area. Hang all food, trash, and scented items.
- Bear canisters outperform hangs — required in many MT wilderness zones.
- Sleep in a tent — not in the open. Keep spray at the tent door.
- Never leave backpacks or food unattended at trailheads.
