Best Campgrounds in Arizona

Arizona's campground network spans from the rim of the Grand Canyon to the red rock country of Sedona and the Sonoran Desert. PeakScout tracks conditions across the state's developed campgrounds and dispersed sites. Summer camping in the desert requires pre-dawn activity — temperatures over 100°F make midday outdoor activity dangerous. Elevation-based camping (Flagstaff area, 7,000+ ft) offers much more comfortable summer temperatures.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need reservations for Grand Canyon campgrounds?
Mather Campground (South Rim) accepts reservations at recreation.gov year-round. Desert View Campground requires reservations May–September. North Rim campground (open May 15–Oct 15 only) requires reservations. Book 6+ months ahead for summer.
When is flash flood risk highest in Arizona?
July through September during monsoon season. Slot canyons (Antelope Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, Sedona washes) can flood without warning. Never camp in a wash or flood channel. Check the storm timeline before camping near any slot canyon.
What is the best time to camp in Arizona?
October through April for desert camping (Sedona, Grand Canyon South Rim, Phoenix mountains). Flagstaff and high-elevation sites (above 7,000 ft) offer excellent summer camping. June–August is monsoon season — flash flood risk is real.
